Dr. Kyle Coughlin: Clarinetist, Saxophonist, Educator, Author

Dr. Kyle Coughlin earned both his doctorate and masters degrees in clarinet performance from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. While there, he studied with Loren Kitt, principal clarinetist with the National Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Coughlin earned his bachelors degree from the University of Maryland as a student of Ed Walters. He has also studied with Dr. James Badolato, former principal clarinetist with the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, and Dr. George Ross, former director of jazz studies at the University of Maryland.

He teaches all levels of music, from beginners to advanced college students and is always searching for new and better ways to educate his pupils and help them understand music and improve as performers. His students have played in every level of GT band in Howard County, as well as the Maryland All-Sate band and orchestra and the Greater Baltimore Youth Orchestra. His former students have moved on to study at the Eastman School of Music, the Peabody Institute, Berklee College of Music, University of Florida, University of Maryland, and Towson University.

Dr. Coughlin is an active performer, educator, and author whose knowledge and experience spans a broad range of musical styles. In the classical world, he is an active recitalist and freelance musician, and he has performed on numerous occasions with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, to name a few. He has played many shows at Wolf Trap, the Lyric Opera House in Baltimore, the Hippodrome, and Arena Stage. His musical travels have led him to performances as far away as San Diego, California, and Evian, France. In the world of jazz, he has produced two critically acclaimed CDs and he has performed at every major jazz venue in the Baltimore-Washington area, including Blues Alley.

Dr. Coughlin has written and published several books including the Beginning Clarinet Songbook, beginning jazz studies for woodwinds (which received a glowing review from The Clarinet magazine), and Christmas duets for clarinet, saxophone, and flute.

He has also designed, programmed, and created several fun and useful interactive educational tools, including MetronomeBot, RhythmBot, a series of clarinet fingering charts, and pitch name games for clarinetists.

Dr. Coughlin teaches at Howard Community College in Columbia, MD. He has also taught at Goucher College and UMBC, and has given master classes at Towson University and the University of Maryland. He has taught for many years at the Howard County Clarinet Camp.
